Beijing, Jan 20 (Prensa Latina) Love expressions are seldom used in China, where millenarian tradition considers that sentiment between parents and children is shown by caring for them, providing the best education and great wedding presents, in exchange for respect and obedience.

The issue is approached in a big article published today by the China Daily with results of a survey conducted throughout the country.

The study confirmed that love declarations, especially between parents and children, are extremely unusual in this overpopulated Asian country.

On the subject, the daily assures, Chinese consider where love is concerned, actions are more important than words.

Most of the people don't easily say I love you and in some cases, the phrase even raises suspicion, as a television program revealed when recording reactions by fathers and mothers who received calls from their children only to say they simply loved them.

Some faked they did not hear them, others responded with questions about an upcoming visit or referred to unrelated topics as "I received the money" or how happy is my daughter today, did she get engaged, and different formulas to prevent having to answer directly to that love expression.

Professor Wei-jun Yeung, sociologist of the University of Singapur and the Institute of Asian Studies, said the tendency is to show love through actions and leave unanswered the good intentions and caring, are seen as a virtue in the culture of this region of the world.

The newspaper gives examples in Chinese history of sacrifices in the name of love, as that of Dong Yong (before our time), who became a slave to pay for his fathers funeral.

Also that of the child Wu Meng (1115-1234) who offered his blood to mosquitoes of a swamp so they may not attack his parents who were so poor they did not have a mosquito net.

China Daily assures that generations in this nation grew up listening to stories of that kind.

The article adds that in an updated version of Patterns of Filial Devotion of the 21st Century, the Chinese government recommends adult sons and daughters to teach their parents how to surf in Internet, provide them with medical insurance and help those who widowed to marry again.

In Article 11 of that document, it recommends to tell parents you love them.
